Sorghum bicolor. This tall heirloom cousin of corn produces huge seed heads 60-100cm (24-36”) long. While technically edible, Sorghum Broom Corn seeds are better used as an ornamental, or as a pollen screen between main crop corn varieties. The seeds colour up and turn shiny as they mature. This product is not a corn or maize variety. As a variety of grass, its seed head is packed more loosely than a corn ear. Stalks can actually be tried and used for sweeping, but you’ll want to use the beautiful, multi-coloured seed heads as fall decorations instead.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC! Cicer arietinum. The humble Kabuli chickpea is a staple food crop all over the world, and has been in cultivation for over 7,500 years. Its subtle flavour makes and excellent vehicle for garlic, herbs, and spices and it is an excellent source of protein, fibre, and minerals. The relatively dainty plants grow 20-50cm (8-20″) tall, with feathery leaves and white flowers that may be streaked with pink or blue. The pods each contain two (occasionally three) edible seeds. The pods themselves can be steamed and eaten whole with the seeds inside, but the seeds are usually extracted and dried. The seeds can be sprouted, dried, eaten fresh, and even pounded into gram flour (besan). As a legume, the plant fixes nitrogen in the soil, which makes it suitable as a cover crop or companion plant. Note that each plant only forms a few pods, so numerous plants are needed for large production.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC! Chioggia Guardsmark Organic beet seeds are a striking Italian heirloom variety with light-red, smooth round roots and bright pink and white alternating rings inside. These sweet beets (pronounced kee-OH-jee-ah) are about 5cm (2″) in diameter with mild green leaves and pale red stems. Interestingly, each red ring in the cross section of these beets represents one lunar month of growth. Chioggia Guardsmark organic beet seeds are a staff favourite that add festive colour to any meal. It’s easy to save seeds from this beet variety, but beets are biennial, so they flower and go to seed the spring after you plant them.

Luminous white roots with strong, 40-45cm (16-18″) green tops. The 25cm (10″) long cylindrical roots have a unique crisp texture, and juicy flavour. White Satin carrot seeds produce handsome Danvers shaped roots that store well and juice well. Try White Satin roasted as part of a winter meal with other coloured carrots or on their own. It is thought that the ancestral wild carrot had roots that were white, but this is a more recent hybrid, bred for uniformity and great flavour. At first sight, your neighbours will think you are harvesting parsnips, but on closer inspection they are most definitely white carrots.
These seeds are coated with an inert, organically certified layer which helps to minimize clumping in storage and seed sowing machines. The coating is approved by organic certifiers in Canada, the US, EU, and Japan.

Imperator type. Viper carrots are long and narrow, with a very gradual taper from top to toe. The tops grow in a highly upright fashion. The crisp orange roots have virtually no core, and the flavour is robust. They can reach over 30cm (12″) in length, but stay only 2cm (3/4″) at the shoulder. This makes them apt for higher density plantings. The tops are strongly attached for easy harvesting.

Everest broccoli seeds produce the highest quality broccoli for harvesting late summer to fall. The 15cm (6″) wide, blue green heads are highly dome-shaped, with small, tightly packed beads. These are large plants that have very high tolerance to downy mildew, and moderate tolerance to brown bead and head rot. For fall harvest broccoli production, choose this exceptional hybrid variety and be rewarded by its uniformity, flavour, and disease resistance. The harvest period is concentrated, so a staggered sowing three weeks apart will produce a larger crop over a longer period. Everest broccoli freezes well for winter meals.

Perfect for summer harvests, Green Magic broccoli holds well with improved hybrid bolt resistance. Considered a mid/early variety, it’s also good for fall harvests. The large plants are blue/green with uniform, tightly packed heads, excellent flavour, and strong resistance to foliar powdery mildew. If saving seeds is not the singular goal of the gardening plan, hybrid broccoli varieties will often produce an earlier, more uniform crop with better disease resistance than an open pollinated alternative. Broccoli (and all Brassicas) make a strong case for hybridizing to bring out the best a crop can offer. In all cases, West Coast Seeds includes open pollinated options for those interested in seed saving. Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

This is the earliest maturing collard we know of. Start harvesting just 50 days after direct sowing, and the tall, upright plants just keep growing. At maturity the leaves can measure over 60cm (24″) from stem to tip, and they are held pointing upward, away from the soil. The petioles are long and substantial for easy bunching, and the plants are highly uniform in size and shape. The bluish green leaves of Top Bunch collards are just slightly savoyed, thick, with large cell walls. Once cooked, the flavour is rich and savory – very nice in soup or simply steamed on its own. Use succession planting from spring to the height of summer for a constant supply of thick, nutritious greens.

Ingenious plant breeding has produced this amazing red sui choi (napa cabbage). The leaves are red throughout, but never bitter in this upright fall harvest wonder. Sow Red Scarvita several times starting June 15 for harvests from September to November. The leaves look incredible in salads and they keep their colour when lightly cooked. Lightweight row cover is recommended, as this beauty gets sown at the peak of the small white butterfly (cabbage moth) population. A simple physical barrier will prevent insect damage.

Wa Wa Sai cabbage seeds produce classic miniature napa cabbages or sui choi. The heads weigh approximately 500g (1 lb) each from spring or autumn sowing. And they are ready to harvest just 60 days from transplanting. Space plants around 20-30 cm (8-12″) apart in the row. They have a lovely sweet flavour and crisp texture that works so well with noodle dishes. Sui choi is dramatically reduced in volume when cooked. Remove the loose outer wrapper leaves to reveal a tightly packed urn-like oblong napa cabbage within. This is an excellent choice for making kimchi at home. Wa Wa Sai has high resistance to clubroot.

Winterbor Kale seeds are our most frost hardy variety. Hybrid vigour really shows in this Scottish kale. Plants are very tall and extremely productive with thick, very curly, ruffled, blue-green leaves. When small, it allows for multiple pickings for salads; later, the large plant handles winter well. Sow Winterbor kale seeds in early spring for summer harvest, but sow more mid-summer for fall and winter harvest. This variety makes an excellent salad when the leaves are chopped finely and used raw. Or add the chopped leaves to soups or stir-fries. Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Fordhook Giant Swiss chard seeds produce dark green, very savoyed leaves are borne on thick, greenish-white stalks. This cold-hardy variety is versatile, reliable, decorative and flavourful. It can also stand up well in summer heat. The Fordhook in its name refers to Fordhook Farm, which was a research farm run for the Burpee seed company from the 1750s until 1981. It’s called Giant because the leaves rise a full 60 to 70cm (24-28″) above the ground, with stalks that are 7cm (2.5″) wide. C. pepo. Reno is a classically shaped acorn squash with moderate furrows and a dependable dark green colour. The strong, single-stemmed, bush plants are very productive. Reno acorn squash seeds produce fruit that have golden yellow flesh that is fine textured with a sweet nutty flavour. If you grow Reno, it won’t be a gamble. Sometimes acorn squash plants produce vast foliage and few fruits. Reno acorn squash does quite the opposite. Flowers appear earlier in the year than some other varieties, so there is a greater potential for a long harvest window. Be sure to plant lots of bee-attracting flowers nearby so that every female blossom gets the best potential for setting fruit.

Dark green, pie-shaped scallopini squash with pure white flesh and superior flavour at immature or full-grown size. Plants are upright and open, so the fruits are easy to see and pick. Total Eclipse pattypan squash seeds replaces Starship as a dark green scallopini. Our favourite use is picking them shortly after pollination, when the fruits are still tiny at only 5cm (2″) across. At this stage they are incredibly tender and delicate, and they make a stunning side dish for any meal. Total Eclipse’s hybrid vigour means that the plants are very productive and the squash are nice and uniform.

C. moschata. Victory Early Butternut squash was bred for speed, so it matures much earlier than the others. It’s the top choice for any short-season garden, producing before the onset of cold weather. The fruits are medium sized at around 18cm (7″) long, each weighing around 1.2kg (2.5 lbs). The flesh is fine and richly flavoured, without a lot of fibres. Avoid overhead watering with squash plants to delay the arrival of powdery mildew in late summer. Plant in rich, fertile soil in full sun and give each plant lots of room to grow in.
